UCSD Thornton Hospital, located in La Jolla, California, is at the center of a master planned medical campus which also includes an Ambulatory Care Center and the Shiley Eye Center. Thornton Hospital is one of San Diego’s most advanced medical, science, teaching and research facilities. Wimmer Yamada and Caughey was responsible for the initial landscape master plan and final design of Phase I.

Specifics:

• Special focus on creating pedestrian linkages and a sense of continuity in and between the various medical research and teaching facilities
  
• Preserved native habitat in natural canyons and open space areas surrounding the medical campus
  
• First large scale irrigation design (40-acres) using drip irrigation in San Diego
