Wimmer Yamada and Caughey was selected to provide landscape architectural master planning services to the San Diego Community College District’s Miramar College. The campus-wide landscape design was part of an overall facilities master plan prepared in 2004.

One major aspect of work included the landscape theme for the central campus commons – an area which at one time had been used as a WW I U.S. Army airfield as was known as “Hourglass Field”. The design for this central space, influenced by history as well as the College’s educational programs in aviation maintenance and mechanics, features a layout (in granite stone) of the original hourglass shaped runways. These runways, set within a large circular pedestrian walk, feature azimuth markings with degree and compass headings. Interpretative signage describes how runways are universally identified using degree headings.

Specifics:

  • Landscape master plan provides a drought-tolerant, highly sustainable design using extensive water conservation measures
  • Administrative responsibility for campus infrastructure design included coordination with all design disciplines and project construction oversight
  • Assigned as Landscape Architect on central campus building projects
