Living Green means we live within our means and not taking away more from our environment than what we give.
Wimmer Yamada and Caughey will always find a way to be more sustainable in our daily duty to live the attitude of being green, especially when representing the profession of Landscape Architecture.
Located a block from San Diego’s treasured Balboa Park, our studio location provides us with an opportunity to get out at lunchtime and to stretch our legs, clear our minds, do a little day dreaming and take in some sunshine and fresh air all while walking through the park’s beautiful grounds.
As a Principal of the firm, pat Caughey sets a good example of reducing carbon footprint and reducing emissions by driving a hybrid vehicle.
We installed a section permeable pavement into our office parking lot to assist in controlling stormwater run-off and to return stormwater directly into the ground. This type of pavement, resembling small crumbled gravel, also reduces flooding and allows water to percolate into the ground helping to recharge the ground water table.
Here in the office we are strong advocates for using a green mode of transportation for the delivery of our documents if and when it is possible. For the past 10 years we have used Kenton Hoppas’ Aloha Bicycle Courier company to do just that. An added bonus is having Kenton or one of his crew members pop into our office and bring us a little Aloha spirit to brighten our day!

While renovating our current office / studio space, it was absolutely imperative to Pat Caughey to have operable windows installed throughout the office. From the benefit of natural light to enjoying fresh air the use of the windows helps to control our heating and air conditioning usage. The windows also provide a visual escape to the outdoors by allowing one’s eyes and mind to wander.
With our centrally located office some staff members are able to walk to work. This makes for a less stressful commute, reduces pollution and gets them ready to take on the day, not to mention, it helps ward off the side effects associated with consuming office treats, especially chocolate!
We have always managed our studio waste by maintaining multiple bins for paper, plastic and other recyclable items. Documents are always viewed electronically prior to
any printing. We plot our drawings on recycled paper whenever possible. And we even
use the backside of our prints as scrap paper.
When possible, we donate electronic equipment to charity and we always recycle print cartridges and the like.
Our location on Fifth Avenue connects with a central transportation corridor into and out of downtown San Diego making us very accessible in location.
We have designed and hope to install in the coming year a green roof and green walls for our studio that will offer our neighbors a great landscape to look down upon and to provide our clients with firsthand knowledge of a growing trend in our industry. And with the benefit of the planted roof decreasing the overall rooftop heat, the environment becomes cooler at the same time!
