Rain Water Harvesting
I recently had the opportunity to meet Heather Kinkade, a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects, and author of two books on rainwater harvesting. She is a graduate of Arizona State University and has been promoting unique ways to harvest water for landscape irrigation for the past twenty years. In our own practice we see this is as a growing opportunity for projects. By either educating the public on various methods or actually supplementing irrigation water with harvested means, the value of stored water has arrived. We are focusing on a number of methods of collecting and storing water from rooftop drainage, condensate from mechanical systems (air conditioners) and other on-site sources. The storage of on-site water assists in both stormwater management and provides a back-up source for use in drip irrigation systems. Simple use of submersible and booster pumping systems makes the water available for both irrigation and in the case of back-country projects, a viable fire protection measure.
