Look back.....but always move forward
A look back at the historical context of a site is important in order to move forward with a meaningful and enriching design. For the San Diego Miramar College Site & Infrastructure Development project, our historical research of the site led us to discover that it had previously been a U.S. Army airfield. Constructed in the 1930s, it was known locally as “Hourglass Field” to describe its shape. Therefore, our design for the central commons area took a look back at history and became a layout of natural stone set into the ground plane, shaped in the original form of the hourglass runways. The runways are set within a large circular pedestrian walkway with azimuth compass markings etched into the paving. Moving forward, Miramar College offers educational programs in aviation maintenance and mechanics. The past connects with the future.
